In June 2023, Jabari’s world shifted overnight when he was diagnosed with an aggressive and devastating form of brain cancer — news no child or family is ever prepared to face.
For Jabari and his single mother, Jessica, life quickly became centered around treatments, medical appointments, and the emotional weight of a diagnosis with a grim prognosis. Yet through it all, Jabari’s strength and determination continued to shine.
A dedicated student and talented athlete, Jabari had always found joy on the football field and basketball court. While his illness forced him to step away from competition, it never diminished his love of the game or his bond with his teammates. He remained a steady presence on the sidelines — cheering, encouraging and inspiring those around him with his resilience and positivity.
Despite the challenges of his diagnosis, Jabari stayed focused on his education and his future. The Jay Fund was honored to award him the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund New York Giants Football Scholarship, helping him take the next step toward community college.
Beloved by everyone who meets him, Jabari experienced a dream come true when he spent a summer interning with his favorite team, the New York Giants — a bright and memorable moment for a young man who has faced more than most.
Jessica has stood beside her son with unwavering devotion. At the same time, she has battled serious health issues of her own, leaving her unable to work. The combined impact of illness and lost income created significant financial hardship, making it difficult to keep up with basic living expenses, transportation and groceries.
The Jay Fund stepped in to help relieve some of that strain, providing support for essential household needs. Jabari and Jessica also participated in two grocery shopping sprees at Inserra ShopRite, where they were able to fill their carts with food and household essentials — easing an enormous burden and bringing comfort during an incredibly difficult time.
Today, Jabari continues to take each day one step at a time, facing his diagnosis with courage, perseverance and hope. With Jessica’s love and support, he remains committed to his education and his dreams.
