Abel

Since Abel’s diagnosis with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August 2024, he has undergone intensive treatment, spending weeks at a time in the hospital as he continues to navigate a demanding and uncertain path.

Abel’s illness has significantly impacted his family. He is one of four children being raised by his mother, Crystal, a widowed single parent who owns her own house-cleaning business. Since Abel’s diagnosis, Crystal has been unable to work because she has to focus on caring for Abel. With her income on hold, the family has faced substantial emotional and financial strain.

During this challenging time, the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund has supported Abel’s family by providing financial assistance to help with essential household needs, including utility bills, phone service and transportation expenses. This support has helped ease some of the pressure so Crystal can focus on Abel’s treatment and on caring for her children.

During long hospital stays, Abel finds ways to pass the time and stay connected to the things he enjoys, including playing on his Nintendo Switch. He has also developed a new interest in hockey after attending a local game through a Jay Fund experience—one of the moments that allowed his family to step outside the hospital environment together.

Abel’s story reflects the reality many families face when a child’s illness demands constant care—where resilience is built day by day, and support can provide stability during an incredibly difficult season.
