Destinee

After being diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, Destinee endured months of intensive treatment, including multiple hospitalizations that often lasted more than two weeks at a time. She spent holidays in the hospital and, even after completing treatment, continues to return regularly for scans and follow-up appointments.

During long hospital stays, Destinee found comfort in creative outlets and familiar worlds. She enjoys arts and crafts, loves Hello Kitty, and often escaped into the stories of Harry Potter. While treatment meant missing many of the experiences her classmates enjoyed, returning to school and reconnecting with friends marked an important step forward. Destinee hopes one day to become a neurosurgeon, inspired by the care she received and the doctors who helped guide her through treatment.

Destinee’s illness placed a heavy burden on her family. Her mother, Danielle, is a single parent of two and the sole provider for their household. Even before Destinee’s diagnosis, Danielle worked overtime to cover basic expenses. As treatment progressed, time away from work and the rising costs associated with care created overwhelming financial and emotional stress. At the same time, Danielle also became a caregiver for her own mother, a cancer survivor.

“The financial strain is overwhelming,” Danielle shared. “I’m responsible for expenses I never imagined having to manage. I just want to give my daughter the chance to move forward and enjoy life again.”

During this challenging period, the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund supported Destinee’s family by helping ease everyday financial pressures related to transportation costs, food and essential communication needs—allowing the family to stay connected with Destinee’s medical team and with loved ones for support.

Destinee’s story reflects the reality many families face when cancer touches every part of daily life—and how support can help families endure while looking toward what comes next.
