Celebrating 31 years

2026 marks 31 years of the Celebrity Golf Classic and the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. The Celebrity Golf Classic will kick off our organization's 31st anniversary celebration.

Why 31? Our namesake Jay McGillis was #31 on the football team at Boston College, where he played under Coach Coughlin. He was diagnosed with cancer and passed away eight months later, and Coach Coughlin and his wife Judy saw firsthand the financial and emotional strain experienced by Jay's family. The Coughlins vowed that if they ever had a chance, they would help families like Jay's.

In 1994, the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Tom Coughlin to serve as their first head coach. It was an incredible professional opportunity for Coughlin—the chance to build an expansion franchise from the ground up. The new role also gave Coughlin and his wife Judy the platform they needed to fulfill their promise to help families who had a child with cancer.

They  launched the Tom Coughlin Jay Foundation with this golf tournament on May 5-6, 1996. Coughlin enlisted the help of his Jaguars employees, friends, neighbors and loyal sponsors to raise $38,000 that first year. Since then, this tournament and the foundation have grown exponentially. What started as a promise has led to over $34 million in support provided to over 6,700 families tackling childhood cancer.
