Congratulations to two brave young ladies who have been tackling cancer and are the 2013 recipients of the Jay Fund’s scholarships.
Riley Theis was diagnosed with Papillary Ependymoma WHO grade II in May 2007 and with a recurrence in January 2010. It has now been almost three years since her last treatment and she continues to do well. In spite of her late effects of treatment she is impressively ranked 9th out of 350, maintaining a 4.5 GPA and is this year’s 2013 – 2014 CDR Rick Murray Memorial Scholarship Recipient from the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. She will soon graduate from Creekside High School. Riley is a member of National Honor Society and Interact Club. She is involved in Relay for Life, Vacation Bible School and Stop Hunger Now. This fall she will be attending Georgia Southern University. She has chosen Chemistry to be her chosen field with the goal to specialize in pediatric oncology. Cassandra Honour was diagnosed with a very rare low grade tumor in November 2004 called multifocal interosseous fibroma. She will soon graduate from Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida where she maintained a 4.13 GPA and ranked 63 out of 574 and is this year’s 2013 – 2014 New York Football Giants Scholarship Recipient from the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. Cassandra participates in multiple extracurricular activities, including Girl Scouts, Medical Club/HOSA, Be the Change Club and many other clubs and a multiple community volunteer activities such as a teen ambassador for cancer patients and Relay for Life leader. This fall she will be attending Flagler College. Cassandra plans to major in Exceptional Student/Elementary Education as well as a minor in Youth Ministries with the goal of one day opening up a special needs K – 12 school with an adult transition program.
