Twenty years after Boston College safety Jay McGillis died of leukemia, his memory remains intertwined in countless lives, most notably Tom Coughlin’s. In his name, Coughlin established The Jay Fund. It has allotted $3.5 million in grants to families suffering through cancer’s financial costs.

The cause hit home for Mark Herzlich, struck a deep-seated chord. When the Giants rookie linebacker was enduring six-hour chemotherapy sessions listening to a doctor who told him he would never walk again Herzlich thought about football, and about Jay McGillis.

This is a doubleheader week for the 65-year-old Coughlin. The early game comes on Friday when the seventh annual Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation charity event is held in Manhattan to raise money and provide emotional support for families of children with cancer.
